Andrew promotes mental health in the workplace:

Andrew is a key member of Baillie Gifford’s Mental Health Group. The Group seeks to improve the mental wellbeing of all employees by improving awareness, encouraging openness, stimulating conversation and providing support.  Andrew was first diagnosed with clinical depression 30 years ago and he was impacted by mental health issues for much of the early 1990s. He was instrumental in establishing a formal group at Baillie Gifford in 2017 to spearhead and co-ordinate efforts to disseminate information on mental health, establish a network of Mental Health Supporters (now over 50 individuals) from across the firm and roll out a training programme, initially for managers and then for all employees, on mental health.  He and several colleagues have shared their stories about mental health across the firm.  He and others have made a film in which they speak openly about their mental health experiences.

Andrew’s vision in the future is that Baillie Gifford’s Mental Health Group becomes redundant as the historic taboo and stigma surrounding mental health melts away.  “We all have mental health and we all have physical health.  Everybody should feel comfortable talking about any difficulties they have at work and seeking help with them - including mental health issues.  We can all make a difference by talking about our mental health”.
